The very thought of lice or mites makes the body tense, and in some people even causes itching. These tiny parasites can turn a healthy farm into a hotbed of disease and stress in a matter of days. Chicken lice and mites not only exhaust the birds, but also reduce egg production, cause itching, anxiety, and even anemia. And what's worse, these pests often remain invisible until the last moment. But how can you recognize the first signs of infection and how can you get rid of them effectively and naturally without chemicals?
The most common types of chicken lice and mites
Lice are the most common type of external parasites in poultry. They do not suck blood, but feed on skin particles, down, and feathers, causing great discomfort to the birds. What do lice look like? They have a yellowish or gray body up to 2 mm long, are active mainly during the day, and settle at the base of the feathers, especially under the wings and around the cloaca.
Equally dangerous is the red mite, which, unlike lice, is nocturnal and feeds on the blood of chickens, hiding in the cracks of the chicken coop during the day. Mites are smaller than lice, up to 1 mm. After feeding on blood, their body turns red and then darkens. These parasites reproduce very quickly.
Signs and symptoms of lice or ticks
To avoid significant damage to poultry by parasites, it is important to notice the characteristic symptoms in time. In particular, their behavior changes: they constantly scratch themselves, combing their bodies and feathers with their beaks. The birds become nervous and lose their appetite. They refuse to perch and avoid dark places.
Visually, this manifests itself as follows: ruffled feathers, bald patches, especially on the neck, under the wings, and near the cloaca; blood spots on eggs or in the chicken coop are a sign of red mite activity.
Therefore, in order not to miss the moment of mass infection of birds with these parasites, the flock should be inspected frequently.
How to get rid of lice in chickens?
If you don't know what to spray lice in the barn, try a natural spray based on vinegar, essential oils, and garlic — it is safe for chickens but deadly to parasites.
Chickens love to bathe in dust — it is natural behavior for them, which helps them clean their feathers of dirt and parasites. So, set up a special place with a mixture of dry soil, wood ash, and sand for dust baths. You can add diatomite, a natural mineral, to this mixture.
This diatomaceous earth, in the form of a fine powder made from microscopic algae, is also carefully applied to the chickens' feathers. Safety precautions should be taken here, using gloves and a mask to avoid inhalation. Sprinkle it in the nests, on the perches, and in the shaded areas of the chicken coop.
In addition to these measures, it is important to keep the chicken coop clean. To do this, you need to remove droppings and old litter every week, regularly wash drinkers and feeders, and treat all surfaces with hot water and vinegar solution. And during disinfection, chickens must be removed from the room.
How to avoid infection in the future?
The most effective method of controlling lice in chickens is a combination of regular cleaning of the chicken coop, dust baths with diatomite, and treatment with natural remedies.
To prevent chickens from becoming infected with lice and mites:
- do not overcrowd the chicken coop;
- inspect the birds regularly;
- ensure good ventilation and sufficient light;
- change the litter at least once a week;
- install dust baths for regular use.
What equipment should be maintained in the chicken coop?
To maintain hygiene and comfort for poultry, it is necessary to take proper care of it. This includes plastic or metal drinkers with removable parts, automatic feeders, ventilation and cooling systems (including fogging), nests and perches that are easy to disinfect.
