It turns out that it is not only feed that plays an important role in ensuring that geese and goslings grow up well-fed and healthy. Feeders are also of considerable importance in this regard. Their type, size and placement determine how well the birds will consume food, whether it will be wasted, and whether hygiene will be maintained on the farm. So let's figure out which feeders are best for geese and goslings to make feeding convenient, economical and effective.
Why is the right feeder important for geese?
Firstly, it directly affects the health of the birds, as a dirty or unsuitable feeder can be a source of infections and diseases. This is especially critical for goslings, whose immune systems are not yet fully developed. If the feeder is too small, too narrow or generally inconvenient, some geese will not get enough food and will therefore grow slowly.
Secondly, food savings — if the feeder is of the wrong design, the feed will spill out or be scattered around by the birds. Feed losses can reach 30%. Special models with sides will prevent this.
And thirdly, in a convenient feeder, each individual has access to food, and the geese will not compete with each other.
Requirements for feeders for goslings
Before purchasing equipment for feeding goslings, you should familiarise yourself with the types available. Several criteria should be considered when making your choice.
- Hygiene: feeders should be easy to clean and not absorb moisture. It is better to choose plastic or galvanised metal, as they do not rust. Another important point is that the design should prevent faeces and debris from getting
- into the feed. Safety: buy feeders for goslings without sharp edges or protrusions that could injure the birds. They should not tip over or wobble.
- Size and height: feeders should be installed according to the age of the birds. For adult geese, they should be 20-25 cm above the floor so that they do not contaminate the feed with their feet. For goslings, place them 5-10 cm above the floor and gradually increase the distance from the floor as they grow. Depth is also important. To prevent feed from spilling out and ensure it is accessible, a feeder with a depth of 8-10 cm is ideal. The width of the trough should be up to 20 cm so that several birds can eat at the same time.
- Number of feeders: there should be 1 running metre of feeder for every 10-15 geese. For goslings — 1 m for every 20-25 individuals.
How to choose a feeder for adult geese
To save feed and maintain cleanliness, it is important to know how to choose a feeder for geese. There are several types of this equipment:
- trough feeders — ideal for dry feed, lightweight and easy to maintain, a relatively inexpensive option for floor feeding;
- hopper (dispenser) feeders — protect feed from moisture, reduce overspending and are best suited for large farms;
- feeders with sides or a mesh top — also effective because they prevent geese from scattering food and minimise losses.
Automation of goose feeding
Feeders with automatic feed delivery work on the following principle: feed is dispensed into the trough in accordance with how the birds consume it. This reduces waste because food is only available in the required amount. This mechanism works through a filling hopper and trough, either spontaneously or on a timer, preventing feed from being scattered.
Screw systems consist of a loading hopper, a screw or feed pipe with several openings, a gear motor, feeders and a feed level sensor. This line automatically dispenses feed, concentrates it in the centre of the feeder, has a grid to prevent scattering and is easy to disassemble for cleaning.

Features of feeders for geese of different ages
As you already understand, not every feeder is suitable for both adult and young goslings; there are different models for each age group. For goslings from birth to 4 weeks of age, buy feeders with low sides (4-6 cm) so that the little ones have free access to food. The trays should be 60-90 cm long for 20-25 heads. Closed feeders are recommended. In the first week of life, you can even use shallow trays so that the goslings can see the feed and learn to eat quickly. For the younger generation (1-2 months), you can use medium-capacity bunker feeders (15-20 litres), placing them 10-15 cm above the floor. Feeders for adult geese (from 2 months) are installed even higher — 20-25 cm, with sturdy, smooth sides from 10 cm. The structure must be stable so that it cannot tip over under the weight of large birds. For groups of more than 50 individuals, automatic systems can already be used. Are there seasonal differences in feeders? It turns out there are. In summer, open trough feeders or mobile feeders that are easy to move around are used. They must protect the feed from sunlight. In winter, bunker or closed models are chosen to protect the feed from moisture and snow. The feed must always remain dry.
Practical advice for farmers
Feeders should not be placed near drinking troughs to prevent the feed from getting wet. The ideal distance is 1.5 m. They should be placed on a solid, level surface so that the feeder does not wobble or tip over. As you already understand, they should not be placed under the scorching sun or rain, because the feed will spoil quickly and the birds will eat less. Feeders should be placed at a certain distance from each other to avoid crowding and fighting between geese. Have you ever thought about the benefits of investing in automatic feeders? First of all, by reducing feed losses, saving farm staff time, and ensuring regular feeding, as timers or augers deliver food on schedule.
According to VADA's calculations, an automated feeding system pays for itself within 1-2 seasons, especially on farms with more than 100 geese. As you can see, there are many nuances to consider before buying feeders for geese. If you have any questions, please contact VADA specialists and choose the best option.
