Recently, Kyiv hosted the UKRAINIAN LIVESTOCK SUMMIT 2024 livestock forum, which discussed the impact of the war, problems and prospects for the industry, https://www.ukrinform.ua reports. Livestock farming in Ukraine today accounts for 30-35% of the total share of the agricultural sector. Ten years ago, farmers set a goal to produce up to 10 million tons of meat and 25 million tons of milk annually. However, these plans were not realized before the war for various reasons. And during the full-scale invasion, Ukraine's agricultural sector suffered direct losses of more than $10 billion.
Poultry farmers are very much affected by the destruction of the power grid and power outages, as poultry farms are one of the largest consumers of electricity, and by the lack of labor. All this causes disruptions in the supply chain for meat producers and processors in the country. However, in the third year of the great war, the poultry industry is gradually adapting and recovering.
Industrial pig production in Ukraine has found itself in a difficult situation this year due to rising production costs and lower purchase prices for slaughter pigs. According to the results of three quarters of this year, the purchase price of slaughter pigs is almost a quarter lower than a year earlier - 58.4 UAH/kg vs. 76.8 UAH/kg including VAT (or 48.7 UAH/kg vs. 64 UAH/kg excluding VAT), respectively. Market operators do not have positive expectations for the end of the year, because even with a gradual recovery in pork prices, feed prices continue to rise.
During the full-scale invasion, Ukraine lost about 12% of cattle, mainly due to the complete or partial destruction of farms and the death of livestock. And the downward trend in livestock numbers continues this year.
